President's Letter

Robin Murray, M.D., FRS.

Since the term Schizophrenia was originally coined by Bleuler in 1911, this year we enter the second century of schizophrenia. We have learned a very great deal about the disorder, particularly in the last decade. So although it remains a puzzle, it certainly can no longer be regarded as a total enigma. Research will be crucial to filling in the remaining pieces of the puzzle and integrating them to make a coherent picture, and we at SIRS expect to play an important role in facilitating this.

I have been reflecting back on the ac-complishments of the Society in 2011. The first regional meeting of the Society was held at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, in August. In the initial confer-ence planning, we had planned for 150 participants and 50 poster presentations. Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Geraldo Busatto, Wagner Gattaz and the local committee members, nearly 450 researchers from throughout South America, North America and Europe attended the conference. Additionally, approximately 140 posters were presented. With the success of the SIRS South America Meeting, the Officers and Board of Directors are working to plan regional meetings in India and China in the coming years. Thus, just as economic power is shifting away from Europe and North America, research on schizophrenia is becoming much more global.

Our various committees have been toiling away to develop new programs and policies for the Society. The Awards Committee has raised funds for 3 new prizes which will be presented at the SIRS Business Meeting in Florence. The Ethics Committee has developed a Financial Conflict of Interest Policy for SIRS, an important issue to keep mem-bers on the straight and narrow! The Publications Committee has helped to redesign the Society website. The Elections Committee identified a slate of outstanding candidates to lead the Society in the coming years. My thanks to all of them and to our administrative staff especially Lyn Sholl.

Plans for the 3rd Biennial Schizophrenia Research Conference in Florence are well underway. Indeed, the Program Committee, especially Jim Van Os and Dawn Velligan, have developed an out-standing scientific program. We have had a record number of oral and poster abstracts submitted this year, and in spite of the gloomy economic climate, we expect a record attendance making this the largest international conference on schizophrenia to date. The scientific quality is higher than ever and as a reflection of this, Philip Campbell, Editor in Chief of Nature, will deliver the keynote address. There have been a number of changes to this year's conference schedule including a fourth plenary session and evening workshops on Sunday and Tuesday. I am looking forward to an exciting and stimulating conference, and to meeting many old and not so old friends again.

Please feel free to contact myself or Lyn Sholl in the Executive Office at:

Call For Committee Memebers

SIRS Members are invited and encouraged to serve on a committee for the coming term, April 2012 – April 2014. We hope you will consider donating your time and leadership skills to one of the many committees looking for volunteers. Please contact Lyn Sholl at: Lhopmayer@parthenonmanagementgroup.com to volunteer and indicate your committee preference. The following committees are looking for member involvement:

Awards Committee - This committee will de-cide on annual scientific awards and scholar-ships for meeting attendance.

Education Committee - This committee focuses on broader issues of education other than those dealt within national and international scientific meetings. They will address the education of the public, press and profession-als in clinical practice across cultures and internationally in the latest advances in schizophrenia research. A portion of their work will be devoted to the exchange of in-formation to third-world, impoverished coun-tries where obtaining new medications and knowledge regarding the disease is lacking.

Ethics Committee - This committee will address all ethical issues pertaining to schizophrenia research and develop guidelines for the field. From time to time ethical conduct issues may also arise about individual members and this committee will develop responses as needed.

Finance Committee - Composed of the treasurer and at least two other members, this commit-tee will plan and implement fiscal procedures in the best interests of the Society and its members. The treasurer is authorized to exe-cute all fiscal procedures when so directed by the Finance Committee in conjunction with the Executive Secretary or executive staff. The Finance Committee shall report to the Board at regular intervals, and a complete report on the Society's finances will be sent annually to all Officers and Board Members. The committee will consider the details of the budget that is prepared by the Treasurer and presented to the Board along with the Finance Committee's recommendations.

Membership Committee - This committee will review all new membership applications and decide on the appropriateness of each.

Program Committee – This committee will so-licit proposals for the Biennial Conference, review the submissions for presentation and make decisions on the content of the confer-ence.

Publications Committee - This committee will act as a liaison with the journals affiliated with the Society and serve as advisors to the editors as needed. They will oversee an-nouncements and other materials concerning the Society to be published in the journal. This would include special issues, meeting reports, abstract issues from meeting and any other information the committee sees as im-portant for publication. This committee will also consider contractual arrangements with the journals and negotiate such contracts that will then require majority vote of the Execu-tive Board for approval.

Elections

Thank you to the Elections Com-mittee for identifying the slate of Officers and Board Members for the 2012 Society elections. An an-nouncement of elected President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer and Board members will be made after the February 10 deadline for voting. Thank you to the Society members who voted in the elections, identify-ing the future leaders of the Society.
